Hello everyone!

I'm Etsuko Honda, the subdelegate of Milk for Japan,
who just came back to Japan

We held the earthquake disaster charity event,
"Disaster Prevention Seminar for the Parents
with Young Children" in Nagoya on July 10th which
was a community-based activity for the child-care
support group "Mama Start Club".

We had a booth for Milk For Japan, prepared at the hall,
and was allowed to distribute liquid milk and the flier
which summarized the contents of our activities and
explained that the event was a part of the support
project for the great earthquake in East Japan.
Further,we promoted the fact that this is supportable
and we are planning a series of activities for the
mothers with small children, to help the members of
the Tokai district deepen their understanding and
help in the preparation of a disaster.

The keynote lecture on the first day delivered the
message which is useful in the preparation and
refuge in the event of a disaster in the home.
The topic, by Ms. Mayu Kyoi of "The Piggyback Ride
Research Institute", was "Disaster Prevention
Seminar which protects a child from harm during
massive earthquake", which is important knowledge
for families with young children.

This is demonstration of the baby hug string w
ithin the keynote lecture.



In our booth, using fliers and samples, we exhibited
the benefits of liquid milk.
I spoke of our activity, and was allowed to carry out
a fund-raising campaign, which will help toward further
milk purchase.



Participants ranged from 0-4-year-old children, mothers
and father. There appeared great interest in liquid milk,
which many were seeing for the first time. Our staff's
2-month-old and 1 years-old children became the model
for the day, and I demonstrated the usage and showed
the people visiting our booth how to use liquid milk
using some of our samples.



Although the baby was unused to a feeding bottle it
wasn't familiar with, it drank the lot up.

みなさん　こんにちは。
アメリカ、テキサス州より日本へ帰国した副代表本多悦子です。

7月10日名古屋市の地域にねざした育児支援団体ママスタートクラブさん
の震災チャリティイベント「ちいさないのちを守るママのための防災セミナー」
に参加してきました。

私たちMilk For japanのブースを会場に用意していただき、私たちの
活動内容、液体ミルクについてまとめたチラシを配布させていただきました。
今回のイベントは東日本大震災の支援プロジェクトの一環で、東海地方の
小さな子どもを持つママたちが災害への備えについて学びを深めると同時に、
被災地を支援できるというもので、シリーズ化を予定しているそうです。

初回のこの日の基調講演は「だっことおんぶの研究所」の京井麻由さん
による『巨大地震から子どもを守る防災セミナー』で、幼いお子様のいるご家庭
での災害に対する備えと避難時に役立つ知恵を教えていただきました。

私たちのブースではチラシと共に液体ミルクの実物を各種展示し、
実際に手に取ってご覧いただきました。
そして私たちの活動についてお話しさせていただき、募金活動もさせて
いただきました。募金はミルク購入の一部に回していただきます。



参加者は0～4歳のお子さん連れのパパ、ママで、初めて目にする液体ミルク
に興味津々でした。
モノを見ただけではということで、スタッフの1歳2か月のお子さんにモデルに
なっていただき、使い方の実演をし、試飲していただきました。



最初は慣れない哺乳瓶に戸惑っていましたが、グイッと
飲み干してくれました。

During the 'BABYJAM Charity Event' held on June 19th,
the activities of Milk for Japan and the ready-to-feed
milk formula distributed to the attendees.

Also, there was a Ready-to-feed milk formula exhibit.



I think that this event was a excellent medium to
inform and educate the mothers and fathers regarding
the Milk for Japan activities and Ready-to-feed milk.

"Tokyo Kids Party BABY JAM" supports mothers and fathers
who want to attend dress function events, but still be
able to bring along their children. This party answers
this need byarranging a party that the whole family, can enjoy.

In this charity event, many mothers and fathers with young
babies attended, and enjoyed the various events Though I
personally was only able to attend for a short time,
there was many different fun events, and I really enjoyed
the occasion.

でも、しっかり子育てしたい！と言うママの為に、ベビーとキッズ&ファミリー
で楽しめるパーティを企画されているグループだそうです。

このチャリティーイベントでは、たくさんの赤ちゃん連れの若いママ＆パパが
来場され、さまざまのイベントを楽しまれていました。
私も少しだけ参加させていただいたのですが、
いろいろな企画が盛りだくさんで、とても楽しいイベントでした！

Hello all,

On June 9th-10th, "Sukoyaka"
The Kesen-numa City health Social Affairs Division for
baby health improvement section held a "Health Checkups
for Infants", and ready-to-made formula milk was
distributed from Peacejam Kesen-numa.

Mothers was distributed during these two days.



When passing the formula out one by one, they explained
how to use it etc., to the mothers and fathers of infants
who had health examinations within four months.




Three months after the earthquake, the ready-to-feed formula
milk was able finally to be delivered from the United States
to the homes in the stricken areas.

We think that ready-to-feed formula milk can help in areas
where water service has not been restored in Kesen'numa,
as it can be consumed as is, without the need to add any water.

We will continuously listen to the mothers and fathers in the
stricken areas, and use this feedback to plan our future actions.

We would like to thank all the members of Peacejam, Kesennuma
staff, for all their had work and support.

みなさん　こんにちは。

6月9日～10日の2日間　気仙沼市保健福祉部健康増進課「すこやか」の
乳児検診時会場にて、ピースジャム気仙沼様よりアメリカ製液状ミルクを
配布いただきました。

準備中のスタッフの皆さん。


この2日間では『モスリンスクェア・プロジェクト』のイギリスママさん達
からの『子育て万能布』　も一緒にお渡しいただきました。



お渡しの際に使い方などを説明いただき、４ヶ月健診を終えた赤ちゃん
とママ・パパへと一人一人説明して手渡ししていただきました。





震災からちょうど３ヶ月。時間が掛かりましたがアメリカからもやっと
液状ミルクを被災地のご家庭へお届けすることができました。

気仙沼ではまだ水道が復旧していない地域があるとのことなので
すぐに飲ませることができる液状ミルクがお役に立てればと思います。

今後は現地のパパさん、ママさんの声をお聞きし今後の活動に
役立てていこうと思っています。

We are very excited to say that on 26 May, we have delivered
480 bottles of ready-to-feed infant formulas, along with
matching number of disposable nipples, shipped from the U.S.,
to the wonderful staff members of PEACE JAM, a group of young
locals (who themselves have been affected by the tsunami , too)
volunteering to help babies in the disaster area of Kesenuma-city,
Miyagi prefecture, Japan.

The motto of PEACE JAM Kesenuma is “No Hungry Baby”.
They are collecting and delivering baby-goods to homes, hospitals,
nursing homes, shelters, and city hall in the disaster area.

Mr.Sato, founder of PEACE JAM was a restaurant/bar owner in Kesenuma,
but he lost his restaurant/bar in the tsunami.
The whole building, everything but the toilet was washed away.
But, that didn’t stop him from founding a volunteer group to help
the young parents and babies in the area.

Although two months has already passed from the tsunami, we can
still see the ruins of the whole city. The tsunami swept away
the whole city. There is still a long, long road ahead of us
to support Japan’s recovery.

26日宮城県気仙沼で赤ちゃん支援をされている　「ピースジャム」様の

ピースジャム気仙沼様は、とにかく赤ちゃんの腹は減らさない。を
モットーに、 自宅被災している赤ちゃんとママに全国からベビー
用品などを集め気仙沼市を中心に配っていらっしゃいます。

経営されていたバーは流され、トイレだけが残っているという

On May 23, 1,200 each of ready-to-feed milk bottles (Similac Advance
and Soylsomi by Abbott Labs) and disposable nipples were delivered
to the disaster response headquarters of Rikuzen-Takata City Hall
in Iwate prefecture.



A representative from Stand Up for Japan went to the local office
to meet the mayor of Rikuzen-Takata City, Mr. Futoshi Toba.

We posted instruction manuals and ingredient lists of the milk on
each boxes. In addition, the representative handed the duplicate
copies of the instructions and the ingredients just in case,
as well as the pictures drawn for the victims of the disaster
by the students who attend Japanese preschools and elementary
schools in Los Angels.



Hereafter, the milk will be distributed to families through
physical examinations and vaccinations for infants that will
be hosted at the disaster response headquarters of Rikuzen-Takata
City Hall. With the cooperation from the local NPOs, the milk
will be carried to the other households also.



In addition, Stand Up for Japan is planning on hosting several
charity baseball lessons with the participation from former pro
baseball players, such as Kazuhiro Kiyohara (a famous retired
pro baseball player in Japan).
These lessons will be held at elementary schools with remaining
school grounds in Rikuzen-Takata.

5月23日岩手県陸前高田市役所災害対策本部にアメリカ製液状ミルク
「Abbott社」　Similac (Advance,SoyIsomi）と使い捨てニップル
各1,200個が届けられました。



Stand Up for Japan 代表様が現地入りし、陸前高田市戸羽太市長様
とお会いしました。

各箱には取り扱い説明書と成分表を両面印刷したものを貼り付けました。
また、もしもの場合のことを考慮し、予備で印刷したもの、そしてLAの
日系幼稚園や小学校の児童が日本の被災地の皆様へ向けて書いた絵
を手渡していただきました。



今後は、陸前高田市災害対策本部にて行われる乳児向けワクチン接種
検診時での配布や、現地のNPO様と連携し各家庭へ配布されます。



また、Stand Up for Japan様は、今後数回にわたり清原和博氏をはじめ
とした、プロ野球選手OBの方々による野球教室を開催予定とのことです。
陸前高田市の校庭が残っている小学校にて実施されます。

There has already been over 20 years of history established
in the western countries.

It was in 1994 when I first introduced the ready-to-feed milk
(liquid milk for infants) to Japan, through the publication
of How to raise children overseas with a relief.
In this book, the formulas for babies from foreign countries
were presented, along with other foreign products for raising
children. There, I introduced that in foreign countries,
there are milk products such as ready-to-feed milk, as well
as concentrated milk that the consumer can dilute with water,
other than the regular powder formulas.

◆ What We Learned from the Great Hanshin Earthquake Disaster
After the book’s publication, the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake
struck Japan and there were difficulties in securing babies’
milk supplies during the relief. The necessity of ready-to-feed
milk during the disaster emergency arose to a considerable topic
of discussion. Later in April, the existence of the ready-to-feed
milk was introduced to Japanese people as “liquid milk for infants”
in the Asahi Newspaper. However, the liquid formulas were never
produced in Japan after that point.

◆ The Merits of the Liquid Milk
In the United States, the liquid formulas are sold just like the
powder formulas in general supermarkets and drug stores.
The liquid milk is actively used especially in hospitals.
The greatest benefit of the liquid formulas is that the user can
open the bottles’ lid and feed the baby just as it is.
The liquid formulas save the troubles of preparation for the powder
formulas, such as measuring the powdered milk, boiling some water,
and then dissolving the formula with the hot water. Moreover,
some liquid milk products can be preserved in room temperature.
The one-time disposable bottle types can feed babies by simply
removing the lids and attaching the nipple caps on them.
There also are disposable nursing bottles and nipples produced
in the United States. Therefore, as long as the liquid formulas
are packed in plastic milk bags, babies can be fed even if
the adults are put into situations where they cannot wash or
sterilize the bottles.

◆Ready-to-Feed Formulas Are Most Useful in Times of Disasters
These formulas are most reliable at times of disasters.
During disaster, access to safe water will be limited,
power shortage will hinder people from boiling water,
bottled water will vanish from store shelves, mental shocks
from earthquakes will hinder mothers from breastfeeding,
there will be a shortage of baby bottles, as well as hygiene
problems for the bottles. In these situations, ready-to-feed
formulas will be a lifeline for the bottle-fed babies.

◆In Various Situations
Ready-to-feed infant formulas come in handy on the go and
during travels. For example, in cases of using powder formulas,
one will have to carry nursing bottles, powdered milk and hot
water in a thermos bottle, which takes up room and makes it
heavy to carry around. The liquid milk can also be a great
help for busy, working mothers or for caretakers when they
become ill. It will encourage women’s social advancement,
along with helping all caretakers to feel more ease when going
out with their babies.

◆As an Option for the Japanese Caretakers
Even though it is true that liquid formulas are more expensive
comparing to powdered milk, I think that it is important to
have the liquid formulas as an option to choose from.
Therefore, I truly hope that the necessary changes in Japanese
regulations will be made, encouraging the Japanese dairy
manufacturers to produce such formulas, and to permit
the importation of liquid formulas from overseas.
