Dear Facebook "Milk for Japan's Babies (MJB)"Campaign supporters:

Thank you always for your wonderful support for
the FB MJB Campaign. We'd like to give you an update
and make an important announcement.

As you are aware, the FB team has been in contact
with three major US formula companies in the last
couple of weeks to see if they would be willing
to provide a bulk discount of their ready-to-feed
formula products for us to send to Japanese disaster shelters.
After exchanging a number of correspondences with our
points of contact via phone, email, and fax, we have sadly
decided to end our attempts at systematically involving
the formula companies in our campaign.

Please note that it's not that the formula companies
do not want to help our cause. They do. But they can't.

One major issue is the existing legal constraint that
prohibits the importing, sales and manufacturing of
liquid formula in Japan. Given such legal context,
the formula companies are in no position to be able to
provide us any of their products--whether through
donation or discounted sales--on a systematic basis,
unless there is an official request from the Japanese
government or such international organizations as
the WHO. And there has been no such request from either
institution to date. Unless this major hurdle can be cleared,
none of the formula companies are in any position to be able
to take any part in our campaign.

The formula companies are aware of the 8,500 signatures
asking for their help in our cause and were very touched
with your actions to try to help the Japanese mothers and
babies but at this point, there are unable to help our cause
due to the legal issues.

Please be advised that we have also been in contact with a
number of other organizations and entities aside from
the formula companies since the inception of the FB
campaign--we'd like to refrain from detailing the specifics
given that we've had to utilize our personal and professional
contacts, but we've been in touch with many foundations,
retailers, airlines and NPOs soliciting institutional donations
and logistical assistance.
Unfortunately, none of these organizations are able to provide
any help at this point given the existing legal constraint in
Japan that prohibits the importing of RTF formula.

We have tried to explain to them that Finnish formula companies
have cooperated with a similar campaign in Finland and
that Finnish liquid formula has passed through customs multiple
times, but none of our US institutional contacts still could
offer any help for us given the legal constraint.
We believe such reservation may be rooted in a fundamental
sensitivity that exists in overall US-Japan trade relations and
have come to conclude that now is not the time to push the issue
any further.

As we are unable to garner systematic help, we have sadly
decided to end our negotiating efforts with the formula
companies and other US based organizations. However,
as you know, there is another group that has been working on
this issue from a different angle, by soliciting individual
level donations to send RTF formula to Japan with
the cooperation from a LA-based NPO, Stand Up for Japan (SFJ).
So, if you are still interested in this issue, please pledge
